Vitra tiles

The first VitrA boutique was built in Istanbul (Turkey) in the early 1940’s. VitrA, one of the main subsidiaries of Eczacibasi, a small ceramics plant, quickly prospered and brought success to its parent firm thanks to its well-stocked shelves, with products ranging from coffee cups to light bulbs. During this chaotic period, Eczacibasi was able to provide some minor relief for the country which, affected by the war was obliged to limit the import of certain goods, via Vitra. Thanks to the massive post-war reconstruction operation, Eczacibasi, whose activities mainly revolved around bathroom products, once again increased its turnover. Marble, which had previously dominated the Turkish market, was dethroned by ceramics, which are more versatile and cheaper. In 1958, demand was so high that Eczacibasi ordered the construction of a second production plant, and subsequently adopted the name, VitrA, which then became a brand in its own right. Several other subsidiaries, also specialised in sanitary products, were also created. The first large-scale VitrA plant, which became a fully-fledged industrial complex a few years later, was opened in 1977 in Bilecik, once again in Turkey. Goods intended for the sanitary sector, bathroom products, tiling (1991) and baths (1992) were all designed and produced at this site. Initial exports to Germany enabled VitrA to expand internationally and establish a solid reputation abroad. In 1999, VitrA even opened a site in Ireland in order to better serve the European market. VitrA currently owns three production sites in Turkey (Istanbul, Bilecik and Izmit), one in Ireland (Arklow) and one in Germany (Engers). A few showrooms have also been created around the world (Russia, the United States, Germany and Ireland). VitrA naturally took its inspiration from the Turkish culture and luxury hammams in the country when designing its bathroom products (toilets, sinks, shelves, storage units, etc.) and exceptional bathrooms with their original and refined designs. Therefore, VitrA bathrooms offer complete tranquillity and relaxation, creating the desire to take care of oneself. Practical, comfortable and stylish, they become the heart of the home.
